For many years, mental health has been that unspoken illness.
Simone Biles became a model and inspiration for others the moment she opened up about her mental health. Seeing more well known artists, athletes, and television stars share their stories and struggles about mental health has encouraged new conversations regarding mental health.
We see as these stars are really just as human as most of us. It is a vulnerability not many show the world, but it has been good to see. Mental illness can have a huge toll on anyone's life and it is not a conversation to be silenced.
Simone Biles showed us just what that looked like. She acknowledged that everything she had gone through was affecting her at the Olympics, and she decided to put her mental health first.
Since then, Biles has become an advocate for mental health. She has begun working for Cerebral, a mental health app that offers treatment for depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Beyond being looked up to for the amazing gymnast she is, she is now being looked up to in a light we have never seen before.
Biles found the things that worked best for her; she allowed herself to seek help. It is great to see that the stigma behind mental health has begun to change though it is not completely gone.
I hope this encourages anyone else to speak up about their own struggles or seek help from the right places. Biles received therapy and found that walks outside became really helpful however, people's struggles are different and not everyone receives the same treatment. Find what works for you, research what you need for this season of your mental health.
Thank you all for reading, I strongly believe that mental health is such an important topic. Hope you come back next week! Same time, same place.
